Classification: Exempt

Salary : $57,000
– $62,000

The Position

The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) is seeking a talented Graphic Designer to oversee the WICHE brand, as well as develop design solutions from concept to completion that help us achieve strategic communications goals.

The ideal candidate will bring technical and creative skills, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to excellence.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Graphic Designer will work closely with colleagues within the organization, as well as external partners, to design products for our print and digital channels, as well as virtual and in-person events, that effectively communicate the mission and value of WICHE to the public and our audiences.


This position is expected to work onsite at our Boulder, Colorado, office.

Organizational Responsibility

The Graphic Designer works collaboratively and strategically to assist the Director of Communications produce both print and digital products, as well as to oversee and ensure the implementation of the WICHE brand.

The position functions as a creative contributor of the Communications team and serves WICHE’s units in a collaborative office environment.

The ideal candidate can demonstrate they know when to take initiative and when to work as a team, how to provide and receive constructive feedback on works in progress and must be detail-oriented and organized to effectively meet project deadlines.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities :

Visual Design
Direct, implement, and execute the creative process from conception through completion for both print projects (e.g., agenda books, annual reports, policy briefs, handouts, event signage, etc.) and digital projects (e.g., social media assets, intranet resources, web graphics, webpage layout, webinar materials, etc.)
Manages multiple projects through rounds of revisions while remaining flexible to urgent requests
Work with and communicate with external vendors on project expectations, pricing, delivery, and timeline
Attend press checks as needed to proof print publications (color accuracy, folds, paper choice, copy changes, finishing elements, binding, etc.)
Understand and implement accessibility best practices (alt tags for images, color contrast ratio, text character count, etc.)

Brand and File Management
Oversee the look and feel of the WICHE brand across our communications efforts and assist with the ongoing adoption of brand standards, editorial stylesheets, and other relevant documents
Create and update logos, maps, charts, templates, and other resources that support the work of WICHE staff
Properly package, save and submit design files for print production and digital distribution
Manage a photo database/visual assets library and/or archive for Communications products

Professional Development and Collaboration
Demonstrate a commitment to WICHE’s mission and values
Maintain collaborative, productive, and professional working relationships within WICHE and with our external partners
Support other communications projects as needed
Ability to manage competing priorities with exceptional attention to detail
Stay up to date on evolving standards and best practices across industry peers

Required Education, Skills, and Experience
Proficiency using the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat), as well as Office 365: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
Experience designing for online platforms such as web, email, and/or social media
A minimum of five years professional experience with a portfolio including print and digital projects
Exceptional relationship-building and project-management skills
Effective time management and organizational skills
Undergraduate degree in graphic design, marketing, or related field experience
Communications competency (basic writing, editorial content judgement, organized, accurate)
Experience working with print vendors
Deadline-minded and detail-oriented, especially when priorities shift
Ability to take constructive feedback positively
Clear understanding of the unique strengths and limitations of print design and digital design

Preferred Skills and Experience
Expert-level proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat), as well as Office 365: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
Five or more years of design experience with a solid portfolio including print and digital projects; Experience in the education or government sector a bonus
Additional multimedia skills (HTML, CSS, UX/UI, photography, video production, animation, etc.)
Understanding of branding, layout, visual hierarchy, color theory, and typography in both print and digital media
Demonstrated ability to work with print vendors and web developers alike
