The Role

Our Registered Nurses are medical professionals that are responsible for the management and the wellbeing of the ophthalmic surgical patient. The Registered Nurse provides expert professional nursing care for the patient during the perioperative course. They plan, implement, and evaluate the care of patients throughout the surgical intervention.

  • Works with all members if the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient throughout their surgical experience.
  • Consistently demonstrates a high level of customer service in a compassionate, caring manner.
  • Independently handles all department questions and patient complaints, developing resolutions promptly and efficiently.
  • Supervises and directs patient care in an individual operating room.
  • Ensures that proper techniques and practices are used in according to accepted standards of practice.
  • Immediately reports any unusual occurrences to OR supervisor or Director, documents the occurrence in the patient record and completes an incident report and initiates outcome tracking, if appropriate.
  • Assists in gathering proper supplies and equipment for ALL surgical procedures.
  • Performs circulating duties with efficiency in ALL Specialties of the ASC.
  • Positions patient for safety and comfort, adjusts table as needed and prepares operative site.
  • Initiates and completes time out on ALL cases and procedures.
  • Maintains count of sponges and needles and documents appropriately.
  • Assists surgeon, anesthesia provider and surgical tech as needed.
  • Monitors patient throughout the procedure for changes in condition.
  • Monitors for breaks in aseptic technique.
  • Assists with postoperative medications and dressings.
  • Assists anesthesia provider with intubation and extubation of the patient.
  • Identifies potential or actual risks to patients/others and takes action to eliminate or minimize risks and maximize safety.
  • Ensures all medications are administered and charted properly.
  • Handles specimens according to policy and procedure.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient care.
  • Updates physician preference cards as needed.
  • Facilitates efficient flow of patients and surgeries.
  • Communicates changes to appropriate personnel.
  • Assists in control and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Actively peruses continuing education.
  • Provides education and support to patients.
  • Assists in cleaning and restocking of OR.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment/instruments in need of replacement or repair.
  • Takes an active role on committees within the department and throughout the clinic
  • Operates and troubleshoots problems of equipment and machines.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient care.
  • Assists in the training and orientation of new employees.
  • Must have flexibility in the job duties and work schedule.
  • Attends all Mandatory staff Meetings


Who You Are

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing school.
  • Current Colorado license.
  • BLS certification.
  • Must complete BLS, ACLS and PALS certification within three months of hire.
  • Two years of operating room experience preferred.
  • Experience in ophthalmology and outpatient surgery preferred.
  • Knowledge of correct procedures in case of an emergency and locations of emergency call system.
  • Knowledge of proper use of BI’s, chemical indicators, preparation of wrapped loads and proper use of autoclaves.
