Engineer III – Embedded Firmware and Reliability

Embedded Firmware Reliability Engineer is responsible for ensuring firmware and embedded software are designed, developed, and tested for variety of projects and hardware systems following reliability best practices.

Work with electrical and embedded systems engineers to develop highly reliable systems that meet product performance requirements during complete product life cycle.nn nnThis embedded software, or firmware, includes the primary data path and enables mechanism control, user interfaces, connectivity, security, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, calibration, and configurability.

The engineer will assist with implementation of various drivers and prototype system control development to bring up and help validate custom designed electronics, suggest changes to electrical hardware, and give feedback on potential improvements to hardware designs.nn nn RESPONSIBILITIES: nn Apply reliability and best design practices in developing highly reliable embedded firmware and software that controls hardware for products in Semiconductor, and Industrial Markets Perform reliability analysis of new firmware drivers and low-level Operating Systems for embedded controllers Perform reliability analysis of embedded system IC drivers for new hardware and microcontroller environments Assist in developing requirements at system, subsystem and component level involving Linux and RTOS-based firmware and software for embedded processors (ARM, x86, etc.) Develop System FMEA, and D-FMEA for products in scope per 1
– IEEE Recommended Practice on Software Reliability Perform root cause investigation of issues using tools such as Fault Tree Analysis Ensure test protocols are well developed to test for the system functionality and customer requirements Work with controls team to improve system reliability and responsiveness Advise on new hardware requirements or components nn QUALIFICATIONS: nn Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, math or science discipline Experience programming and testing embedded controllers linked to real-world physical systems Experience reliability engineering and associated methods and tools Familiar with Electronics Design, schematics, reading datasheets Ability to scope work and estimate required effort

– customer interaction and effective small team member nn Preferred Skills & Experience: nn Master’s degree (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Math, related field) Strong understanding of embedded firmware and software principles and ability to contribute to design sessions Experience programming in C++, scripting skills in Python, and testing high reliability, safety-critical, and fault-tolerant system Hardware debug experience, including familiarity with tools such as the oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, etc.

(SPI, CAN, Ethernet or similar) Proficiency with debugging, performance optimization and unit testing Experience with HDL and FPGA tools (e.g.

Xilinx Vivado, Altera Quartus II) Strong understanding of operating system fundamentals, including schedulers, network stack, file system, memory management Thorough knowledge of computer architecture, software systems, networks, and electronics hardware Strong Reliability engineering background with familiarity in methods and tools such as reliability modeling and prediction, FMEA, block diagram, Fault Tree analysis reliability testing, risk assessment, requirements management, test protocol development, worst case circuit stress analysis.
