We strive to attract a highly diverse workforce and create a culture where every employee feels welcomed and respected and they can be their authentic selves.Job DescriptionThe NREL National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) is seeking a mechanical and/or manufacturing engineer to focus on the development of innovative semi-automated and fully automated systems for the manufacturing of sophisticated composite structures, including efforts to craft automated and/or additive manufacturing approaches to the molding and finishing operations of composite manufacturing. The effort will include work at the CoMET on NREL’s Flatirons Campus.Job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):* Apply NREL/DOE and industry standards to conduct work in safe manner.* Develop novel composite engineering and automation solutions to be scaled and deployed for applications such as wind energy, marine energy, and vehicle composite materials.* Conduct research on the integration of robotics and automation in factory environments to enable sophisticated production solutions to augment US composite manufacturing competitiveness.* Design composite manufacturing systems, including mechanical, electrical, controls and safety elements, to be deployed at-scale.* Develop rapid prototyping technology for deployment with projects involving FDM, SLA, and SLS additive manufacturing processes in conjunction with robotics.* Develop new automated composite manufacturing opportunities at NREL with diverse collaborators.* Develop innovative manufacturing processes for thermoset and/or thermoplastic composite wind blades that enable sophisticated, low-cost, reduced-embodied-energy production of wind blades.* Develop composite material recycling solutions, wind blade end-of-life disposal optimization, and automation of such processes for potential mobile deployment at wind turbine installation sites.* Work with a team of engineers, scientists, technicians, and analysts to make NREL a leading laboratory for composite automated manufacturing research.* Work with senior research staff and industry partners to develop and execute research plans.* Collect, analyze, and report data from research projects. Contribute input for peer reviewed publications.* Implement projects efficiently and safely given long range directions with some oversight by recommending technical approaches..Basic QualificationsRelevant PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar Engineering focus and 4 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar Engineering focus and 7 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or similar Engineering focus and 9 or more years of experience..Additional Required Qualifications* Experience with development of automated manufacturing methods from proof-of-concept to commercialization.* High proficiency in the development of automated manufacturing systems using systems engineering, robotics, advanced controls, mechatronics, computer vision and machine learning.* Applies extensive engineering technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related fields.* Considered a technical resource.* Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities.* Proven experience in management of projects.* Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.Preferred Qualifications* Significant knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.* Training in team, task, or project leadership responsibilities.* Experience in project management.* Experience working with composite manufacturing and characterization, including the development of systems for vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), or infusion, for composites.* Experience with additive manufacturing techniques..Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Annual Salary Range: $90,600 – $163,100Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
