Austin, Boston, Boulder, New York, Raleigh, San Francisco, Washington DC, or Remote-US Office of the Chief Scientist Team Overview The Office of Chief Scientist (OCS) is the nexus of science at EDF, ensuring that the science that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available information. To be most effective in this role, OCS provides programmatic support for all scientists at EDF and fosters relationships with scientists outside the organization. Overall Function The Atmospheric Scientist will be a key member of the science team supporting EDF’s Global Clean Air initiative. The successful candidate will use proven analytical and research skills to work collaboratively with other EDF scientists and program experts and external partners to design, perform and/or advise scientific studies to characterize air pollution spatial patterns and source drivers and help develop and advocate for science-based, economically sound mitigation policies, with an emphasis on reducing exposure inequities. The Atmospheric Scientist will report to the Associate Chief Scientist. Key

Responsibilities

Conduct rigorous scientific research to gain actionable insights on the spatial patterns of air pollution and their emission sources.Provide scientific expertise to increase the uptake of hyperlocal and other enhanced air pollution monitoring in other cities around the globe.Synthesize scientific results and insights from recent literature and communicate that information to a multi-disciplinary team, including EDF scientists, policy experts, and corporate and community partnership specialists, as well as external partners.Author scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals; write reports/fact sheets/blog posts for general audiences.Provide scientific expertise in support of other EDF workstreams and external partners.Participate in advancing EDF Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.Independently support other rapid response and/or project development efforts on an as-needed basis.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a relevant specialty in the natural sciences, engineering, or environmental studies.Two or more years of experience in atmospheric science research (which could include post-doctoral research).Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret large datasets of air pollution measurements to derive policy-relevant insights.Familiarity with the scientific literature relating to urban air pollution, atmospheric chemical and physical processes, emission sources, and advances in monitoring and data analytics.A passion for environmental protection; interest in relating scientific research to real-world policy and in bridging the worlds of advocacy and academia.Excellent written and oral communication skills; interest and ability to communicate complex ideas in writing and orally to multiple stakeholders with different levels of expertise.Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines in support of highly visible work.Results-driven, self-starter with the ability to think strategically and carry out responsibilities in a timely and effective manner.Excellent problem solving and multi-tasking skills; ability to work independently and to support a multi-disciplinary team, with the judgment required to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workloadDemonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.Experience with programming languages including R, Python; spatial analysis/GIS; and SQL databases.Willingness to travel and work with teams across different time zones.
