PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Specialist Operating Practices position performs auditing of on-board data in support of requests from the Operations Technology, Safety and Regulatory teams.

Information is used to determine root causes for a number of events occurring in railway operations, which consist of, but are not limited to the following: derailments, fuel utilization, Energy Management, Positive Train Control, Distributed Power, Locomotive Video and Voice Recording (LVVR).

Analysis results may also be used to enhance Equipment Health Monitoring System (EHMS), Locomotive Health Monitoring System (LHMS), and Operational Alerting.

The position may also assist in developing preventative and/or predictive technologies to improve safety, increase operational efficiency, and employee performance.

Evaluating data is a responsibility of the employee to facilitate both internal requests and those from regulatory bodies such as Transport Canada, the Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES Support Operational Technology, Safety and Regulatory investigations; Execute auditing of Locomotive Video and Voice Recording (LVVR) data per regulation and provide detailed reports; Support Operations on service interruption drilldown to root cause; Review available data for operator compliance and improvement opportunities; Assist in developing business cases for new technology purchases and/or process integrations based on data analysis results to improve railway safety and efficiency; Define requirements and work with IT staff to incorporate all technological changes; Visit train yards and derailment sites as required to collect evidence and data immediately as incidents occur; Support 24/7
– 365 analysis; and Adhere to Canadian Pacific’s health and safety policy.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS Ability to audit Operations crew compliance; Knowledge of applicable Federal Railroad Administration regulations; Knowledge of applicable Transport Canada regulations; Ability and drive to drill down to determine root causes of incidents; Ability to support and independently manage multiple projects; Review processes and offer feedback for improvements; Ability to develop business rules, machine learning models and incorporate new technologies to improve safety and operational efficiency; and Willingness to cross-train and learn multiple field positions to enhance qualifications.
