Underwriter, Captives


This is a Contract position in Greeley, CO posted May 13, 2022.

By doing so, risk bearing customers will have financially superior excess of loss workers’ compensation protection, and brokers and customers alike will benefit from our innovative services aimed to reduce our customers’ total cost of risk.

ResponsibilitiesResponsible for the appropriate WC/AL/GL primary underwriting of accounts associated with captive programs, and coordination with the Underwriting Director, Captives in development / management of captive programs.

This includes executing objectives related to production and profitability goals; appropriate account underwriting and assistance with account service plan development via MEC’s value proposition.

FinancialMeet or exceed renewal account retention, premium and loss ratio goals.Meet or exceed new business premium and loss ratio goals.

Underwriting DisciplineAdhere to department policies, guidelines and authority levels.Demonstrate excellent technical knowledge regarding WC/AL/GL insurance, underwriting risk analysis, NCCI and ISO policy forms / endorsements, and IT applications.Demonstrate excellent knowledge of captive programs and how each program is developedDemonstrate excellent knowledge of MEC’s agreements associated with captive programs.Manage primary underwriting responsibilities associated with captive program development and captive program referrals in coordination with the Underwriting Director, Captives.Demonstrate thorough analysis of risk, establishment of appropriate terms, and appropriate documentation to support analysis and terms.Submit referrals as required, including key account information and recommendations.Provide recommendations for improvements to the underwriting risk evaluation approach.

Customer and Broker RelationshipsMeet or exceed service standards to our broker partners.Develop brokers regarding utilization of MEC’s value proposition.Engage, persuade and provide services to our customers that will meet their needs and assist in improving their workers’ compensation program.Value PropositionConsistently demonstrate knowledge and utilization of MEC’s value proposition and services.Remain knowledgeable and up-to-date regarding MEC resources, services, and outcomes of recommended services:Claims servicesPredictive analytics servicesDemonstrate ability to identify services that would potentially be of most value to customers.

Position RequirementsFormal Education & CertificationBachelor Degree or equivalent.5 years WC/AL/GL insurance experience.

Knowledge & ExperienceAdvanced underwriting knowledge and ability to evaluate risks and determine the appropriate underwriting solution.Advanced negotiation skills.Advanced ability to use a consultative approach to persuading brokers and clients on the use of MEC services.Ability to build trust and gain credibility with co-workers and business partners.Ability working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.Technically competent with Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Operational systems.Personal AttributesExcellent listening, communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.Highly self-motivated and directed.Strong customer service orientation.Advanced time management and follow-through skills.

Work ConditionsTravel 20% or less.Occasional evening and weekend work to meet deadlines.
